Netflix Announces George Michael Biopic, Inspired by Acclaimed Documentary, Set to Hit Theaters in 2026
Netflix has confirmed development of a feature-length biopic on the life of George Michael, set for theatrical release in 2026. Titled “Faith: The George Michael Story,” the film is based on the acclaimed 2022 documentary Freedom Uncut, which was co-directed and narrated by the late pop icon himself. With full backing from his estate, this marks the first official dramatization of his life story.
Freedom Uncut offered a rare, intimate look into George Michael’s world—focusing on his career-defining Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 era, his legal battles with Sony, and the devastating loss of his first love, Anselmo Feleppa. The biopic will expand this foundation into a cinematic narrative, giving audiences a deeper emotional connection to both his artistry and his personal battles.
Though the cast remains unconfirmed, sources say Netflix is in final talks with a British actor to play Michael, with Theo James rumored to be a frontrunner. The production team is reportedly prioritizing authenticity in voice, appearance, and performance. Netflix also confirmed that original recordings from George Michael’s discography will feature prominently in the film.
Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, Billy Elliot) has been tapped to helm the project, with screenwriter Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) adapting the story. The team aims to preserve the tone of Freedom Uncut while introducing cinematic storytelling techniques that will bring George Michael’s highs and lows to life for the big screen.
The biopic will focus on key chapters from Michael’s life: his time with Wham!, his explosive solo career, his fight for creative control, and his journey as a gay man in the public eye. By adapting material from a documentary in Michael’s own words, the film promises to strike a balance between artistic license and factual respect.
The George Michael estate, which had previously shut down reports of a biopic in 2023, is now fully involved. In a joint statement, they called the Netflix production “a continuation of George’s own desire to tell his story honestly, without tabloid distortion.” They added that the film will “honor his legacy as both an artist and a human being.”
Netflix’s decision to premiere the film in theaters before streaming is part of its continued push into awards-season territory. The theatrical release will be followed by a global Netflix launch, ensuring maximum reach across George Michael’s diverse international fanbase.
With its foundation in Freedom Uncut, a proven creative team, and the blessing of those closest to the singer, Faith: The George Michael Story is shaping up to be a powerful cinematic tribute. As the world awaits its 2026 release, fans can expect an emotionally rich, musically vibrant portrait of a man who redefined pop music—and never stopped fighting for his voice.
