Alexander Dreymon Returns as Uhtred in “Return to Bebbanburg” – The Last Kingdom Spin-Off Set for 2026

The prayers of The Last Kingdom faithful have finally been answered. In what can only be described as a seismic moment for historical drama fans, Alexander Dreymon has officially signed on to reprise his iconic role as Uhtred of Bebbanburg in a brand-new spin-off series titled Return to Bebbanburg. The series is slated to premiere globally in early 2026, and the buzz is already electric.

After the 2023 release of Seven Kings Must Die, many believed Uhtred’s story had reached its conclusion. But the ambiguous ending left fans wondering if the fearless warrior’s journey was truly over. Now, with Dreymon returning to the role that made him a household name, Return to Bebbanburg promises to explore the legacy, legend, and lasting impact of the man who fought for a united England.

Set a decade after the events of Seven Kings Must Die, the spin-off will follow an older, more reflective Uhtred navigating the political chaos left in the wake of England’s unification. With new threats rising in the north and old enemies returning to challenge his claim, Uhtred must once again take up the sword—not just for Bebbanburg, but for the future of his bloodline.

In a statement released by Netflix, Dreymon said, “Uhtred is part of me, and the chance to revisit him at a new stage in life felt both natural and necessary. This is a different Uhtred—wiser, grimmer, but no less dangerous.” The actor, who also serves as executive producer, teased “epic battles, impossible choices, and a reckoning with the ghosts of the past.”

Return to Bebbanburg will introduce a new generation of characters—warriors, kings, and kin—all shaped by Uhtred’s legacy. Fans can expect cameos from beloved faces and fresh talent joining the cast, as the show delves deeper into the shifting sands of 10th-century Britain. Rumors suggest the plot will focus on Uhtred’s efforts to mentor a successor while confronting a rising northern rebellion.

The series will once again be helmed by Martha Hillier, lead writer of The Last Kingdom, ensuring the spin-off stays true to the tone, intensity, and character-driven storytelling that made the original series such a global success. “We never wanted to do a spin-off just for the sake of it,” Hillier said. “But when this story took shape—with Alexander on board—it became something we couldn’t ignore.”

Filming for Return to Bebbanburg begins this fall in Hungary and the UK, with early promotional stills expected to drop by winter 2025. Fans can also look forward to behind-the-scenes featurettes, exclusive interviews, and teaser trailers rolling out throughout 2025 to build the hype.

With a legacy as rich as Uhtred’s and a fan base as loyal as his warriors, Return to Bebbanburg has all the makings of a television phenomenon. Mark your calendars. In 2026, destiny rides again.
