Hunter Lawrence claims victory at the Australian Supercross Open in Melbourne.
Hunter Lawrence Triumphs in Melbourne, Joey Savatgy Claims Championship Title
Hunter Lawrence made a triumphant return to Australia by winning the fifth and final round of the Australian Supercross Championship in Melbourne. Meanwhile, fellow Monster Energy Supercross rider Joey Savatgy secured the overall championship title.
“It was incredible,” Lawrence shared in a news release. “The adrenaline rush from the stadium was unreal. That feeling was honestly a cooler feeling than winning my championships. Having the country behind you is unreal. We cop a lot of criticism in America, so to feel that at home is unbelievable. It’s tough to put into words.”
Hunter and his brother, Jett Lawrence, returned to their home country during the offseason to compete, drawing massive support from fans. Over 42,000 spectators packed Marvel Stadium, making it the largest Supercross event ever held in Australia.Hunter secured victory by winning the last two of three races, while Cooper Webb claimed victory in the first race. Unfortunately, both Jett and Webb faced bike damage and had to retire before the final race. Webb sustained minor bruises but avoided serious injury.
Despite his setback, Jett remained upbeat, reflecting on the overwhelming support they received. “The AUSX Open was a good reset,” Jett said. “To actually feel the backing of the Aussies was incredible. We’ve always heard they’re behind us, but to truly experience it was amazing. I felt it a bit in 2019, but this was next level. Walking out to more than 40,000 fans cheering—it’s something you can’t put a price on. It’s above all our championship wins.”
Joey Savatgy clinched the 2024 premier-class Fox Australian Supercross Championship, his first, despite enduring a flat tire in the final race. With consistent performance throughout the season, he ended the night with a six-point lead over Dean Wilson.“It was stressful, much more than I wanted it to be,” Savatgy admitted. “I’m proud of the effort we put in. Our primary goal was to secure the No. 1 plate, and winning the whole event would have been the cherry on top. Although it didn’t happen tonight, the crowd was incredible.”
