Netflix Announces Uhtred Prequel Series Set for 2026 Release
Netflix has officially greenlit a prequel to The Last Kingdom, focusing on the early years of its iconic protagonist, Uhtred of Bebbanburg. The series, set for release in 2026, promises to explore the rarely seen beginnings of the boy who would grow to become one of the fiercest warriors of 9th-century England.
Titled Uhtred: The Lost Years, the prequel will follow young Uhtred from his days as a Saxon noble’s son to his brutal capture by Danish raiders. The story will reveal the emotional and cultural turmoil he faced, being torn between two worlds—his Saxon heritage and the violent, free-spirited Viking way of life.
Producers have hinted that this series will dive deeper into Uhtred’s psychological evolution than ever before. Viewers will witness how trauma, identity loss, and forced adaptation forged the foundation of the conflicted hero seen in The Last Kingdom. The new series aims to answer key questions fans have asked for years: Who was Uhtred before the warrior? What broke him? What shaped him?
Casting for the younger version of Uhtred is underway, with Netflix reportedly looking for a fresh face capable of balancing vulnerability and intensity. Supporting characters will include Uhtred’s father, his captors, and early mentors among the Danes—particularly Ragnar the Fearless, who played a major role in Uhtred’s transformation.
Creators promise a grittier, more emotional tone. The brutality of the Viking world will be front and center, but so will the intimate, internal conflict of a boy learning to survive, trust, and ultimately embrace the people who killed his kin. This mix of violence and character study is expected to appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences.
Historical accuracy remains a top priority. As with the original series, the show will draw from Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories, while also consulting historians to ensure authentic depictions of Viking and Saxon cultures during the late 800s. Expect realistic battle scenes, cultural rituals, and stark portrayals of early medieval life.
The show will also lay groundwork for future stories in the Last Kingdom universe. By exploring Uhtred’s early bonds, betrayals, and values, Netflix is setting the stage for potential crossovers or spinoffs centered on key characters like Ragnar, Brida, or even the childhoods of future Saxon rulers.
With Uhtred: The Lost Years, Netflix is doubling down on its medieval drama success. Fans of The Last Kingdom have long craved more insight into their favorite warrior’s past, and now they’ll finally get it. Expect more announcements, teasers, and casting news as production ramps up in late 2025.
