Born Ronald James Padavona on July 10, 1942, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Dio’s musical journey began in 1957 with the formation of the Vegas Kings, later known as Ronnie and The Rumblers. In 1967, Dio formed the rock band Elf, which gained recognition as a regular opening act for Deep Purple. This exposure led to a pivotal collaboration with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, resulting in the formation of Rainbow in 1975. As the lead vocalist, Dio’s powerful voice and dynamic stage presence were instrumental in shaping the band’s distinctive sound, contributing to three influential studio albums.
Dio’s career reached new heights in 1979 when he replaced Ozzy Osbourne as the lead singer of Black Sabbath.
