Sony Pictures Greenlights Boondocks Spin-Off Featuring ‘A Pimp Named Slickback’ with Katt Williams Set to Star

Sony Pictures Animation has officially announced a new animated spin-off series inspired by The Boondocks, centering on one of the show’s most iconic and flamboyant characters—A Pimp Named Slickback. The spin-off will see comedian and actor Katt Williams return to voice the character he helped make legendary, igniting excitement among longtime fans of the original series.

First introduced in the early 2000s during The Boondocks’ acclaimed run on Adult Swim, A Pimp Named Slickback quickly became a fan favorite for his exaggerated persona, comedic timing, and memorable quotes. Voiced with flair and precision by Katt Williams, the character satirized elements of Black culture and the pimp archetype while delivering biting social commentary in true Boondocks fashion.

According to Sony Pictures, the new show will explore Slickback’s origins, philosophies, and the outrageous world he operates in—balancing his infamous code of conduct with the shifting cultural landscape. While still maintaining the irreverent and edgy tone of the original series, the spin-off is set to expand Slickback’s universe with a mix of old and new characters.

Katt Williams, who has experienced a career resurgence in recent years through stand-up comedy and film roles, expressed enthusiasm for reprising the role. “It’s a blessing to breathe life into a character that resonated with so many people. Slickback is wild, no doubt, but he’s also smart, funny, and surprisingly layered. We’re going to give fans something they’ve never seen before,” Williams stated in a press release.

The creative team behind the project includes a mix of returning veterans from The Boondocks and new talent. While Aaron McGruder, the original creator, is not confirmed as showrunner, sources indicate he has provided input on the development to ensure the spin-off stays true to the spirit of the original series.

Sony has promised high production values, combining updated animation techniques with the distinctive style fans remember. Early concept art suggests a sleeker, more vibrant aesthetic, while keeping the characters’ core designs recognizable. The animation will be handled by Sony Pictures Animation’s in-house team, known for their work on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

In terms of tone, the spin-off will reportedly lean heavily into satire and absurdist humor, echoing the socially conscious, provocative themes that made The Boondocks a cultural phenomenon. Issues such as toxic masculinity, hustle culture, cancel culture, and modern relationships are expected to be explored through Slickback’s unique—and often outrageous—lens.

The show will also introduce new characters from Slickback’s past and present, offering deeper insight into the environments and people who shaped him. From rival pimps to old flames, the supporting cast is said to be just as colorful and controversial as the star himself.

Fan reactions on social media have been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising Sony for recognizing the enduring appeal of both the character and Katt Williams’ performance. Memes, quotes, and fan art have already begun circulating in anticipation of the release.

Despite the excitement, some critics have raised concerns about whether the humor of The Boondocks can still land in today’s more socially conscious climate. Sony, however, insists that the series will walk the fine line between satire and sensitivity, without compromising its bold voice.

The series will be released under the Sony Pictures Television banner and is currently slated for streaming distribution, though no platform has been officially announced. Negotiations are reportedly underway with both Netflix and Prime Video, with a formal announcement expected this summer.

Production is set to begin in late 2025, with a tentative release window in mid-2026. If successful, the studio is reportedly considering additional spin-offs based on other beloved characters from The Boondocks universe, potentially creating a new animated franchise rooted in McGruder’s groundbreaking vision.
