Jamie Carragher has angrily criticised Newcastle United’s defensive performance at Stamford Bridge as a very unacceptable performance as the team conceded three goals in a single game for the ninth occasion in the Premier League this season which is really bad. Serious goals from Chelsea players resulted in their defeat.
Eddie Howe’s team have faced many challenges in recent months, as they are now certain to end the season with very low points than they achieved last season and the seasons before, even if they secure victories in their next ten league matches. While trying to discuss Man United’s display on Monday evening, Carragher expressed his disappointment with their defensive efforts, calling their performance very unacceptable “I admired Newcastle last season,” Carragher said and talked after the match.
“Their level of intensity reminded me of when Jurgen Klopp initially took charge at Liverpool, with players constantly running all over the pitch. But, due to fewer matches and injuries this season, they have relied heavily on the same fit players, causing a serious refusal in their performance.”
The refusal in Newcastle’s performance and their defensive struggles have aligned with Nick Pope’s injury. He suffered a dislocated shoulder during their victory over Manchester United football team in early December in the year 2023, and Jimmy Carragher believes that his absence from the pitch is a significant factor in Newcastle’s recent defensive challenges which Is leading to their downfall.
He said, “Pope plays a crucial role in this team. He’s among the top defenders in the Premier League and adept and serious at covering behind the high defensive line and pressing we have witnessed. While his absence is significant, there are other contributing factors to consider in the team.”
“When you examine the number of shots faced during matches, you see a drop from being the fourth best in the league to 15th in the league. This is not solely down to the goalkeeper it reflects the overall team setup as a whole. Consequently, you do anticipate a decrease in the save ratio of the post. But, what’s particularly striking is conceding three or more goals, which now ranks as the worst in the league, occurring eight times in the last 14 games. This statistics are quite astonishing, especially for a team that was defensively outstanding last season and the seasons before.”
