The Boston Red Sox are facing a dampening of their Opening Day excitement as second baseman Vaughn Grissom is unlikely to be ready due to a groin injury, according to the Boston Globe.

Grissom reportedly sustained the injury while participating in field activities for the team during Spring Training. He has been contending with leg soreness throughout the offseason.

“I was just taking ground balls, and it bit me,” Grissom said, per MLB.com. “… Obviously, it [stinks]. New group, I want to be out there with the guys, so it’s definitely frustrating.”

Enmanuel Valdez is anticipated to fill in for Grissom at second base for the time being, according to the Red Sox. Team manager Alex Cora expresses confidence, stating that the team should manage well throughout the remainder of its Spring Training schedule.

“This happened, and now we just have to be patient, get him stronger, get him better, and he’ll be OK,’’ Cora said. “… We’re obviously disappointed in a sense because we wanted Vaughn to get as many reps as possible and hopefully be the starting second baseman of the Boston Red Sox, but I think we’ve … got a good [choice to step up].”

Grissom joined the Red Sox this offseason, transitioning from the Atlanta Braves where he played for the past few years. In the 2023 season, Grissom achieved a .280 batting average with 75 total at-bats, concluding the season with 21 hits and nine RBIs. The Red Sox aim to enhance their performance from the 2023 season, where they finished with a record of 78-84.

As of now, Boston is engaged in a spring game against the Tampa Bay Rays, and the score is currently tied.
