The Red Sox outpaced the Guardians in the MLB’s fastest nine-inning game in more than a decade.

On Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox secured a 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in the swiftest MLB game since 2010. This remarkable match, marked as the fastest since the introduction of the pitch clock, concluded in just one hour and 49 minutes. Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck demonstrated an outstanding performance, delivering 94 pitches in a flawless shutout. This achievement marked the first shutout of his career and the initial complete game thrown by a Red Sox pitcher since May 2022. Houck’s stellar performance included nine strikeouts while only allowing three hits.

According to MLB’s Sarah Langs, the most recent instance of an MLB game being played at this pace was on June 2, 2010, when the Cleveland team fell to the Detroit Tigers in just one hour and 44 minutes.

In the third inning, second baseman Pablo Reyes crossed the plate to notch the Red Sox’s initial run of the evening. Reyes reached base with a single and later capitalized on a balk to make it home. Then, in the bottom of the fourth inning, catcher Connor Wong smashed a solo home run, spanning 366 feet, to further boost Boston’s advantage.

With this win, the Red Sox advanced to a 10-9 record for the season, while the Guardians dropped to 12-6.
