Netflix Officially Announces a Documentary on the Career of Daniel LaRusso, Set to Premiere in 2026

In a move that will excite generations of Karate Kid fans, Netflix has officially announced the production of a brand-new documentary focused on the legendary martial arts icon, Daniel LaRusso. The project, set to premiere in 2026, will explore the fictional character’s journey from underdog teenager to respected sensei, tracing his evolution across film and television. For fans of both the original Karate Kid trilogy and the hit series Cobra Kai, this is a nostalgic deep dive decades in the making.

Ralph Macchio, who has portrayed LaRusso since 1984, is confirmed to return in the documentary—not as a character, but as the narrator and central voice. According to Netflix, Macchio will share exclusive insights into how he developed Daniel’s character, the cultural impact of The Karate Kid, and how the role shaped his personal and professional life. Interviews with cast members, directors, and stunt coordinators will provide additional depth and context.

The documentary, tentatively titled “Daniel LaRusso: The Crane Kick Legacy”, will feature rare behind-the-scenes footage from the original Karate Kid films and newly filmed segments from Cobra Kai. From the memorable “wax on, wax off” training scenes to the iconic All Valley Tournament battles, the film promises a full-circle look at how Daniel went from bullied teen to martial arts icon.

Producers say the film will not just rehash old storylines, but offer a critical look at how Daniel’s choices, flaws, and rivalries shaped the core values of the franchise. Special attention will be given to Daniel’s relationship with Mr. Miyagi, a bond that became the emotional heart of the Karate Kid universe. Viewers can expect never-before-heard stories about Pat Morita’s influence on the character and the evolution of their on-screen chemistry.

In addition to the archival footage, the documentary will include interviews with co-stars William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), Martin Kove (John Kreese), and Xolo Maridueña (Miguel Diaz), as well as modern-day martial arts experts analyzing LaRusso’s fictional techniques. Netflix aims to blend nostalgia with analysis, creating a product that appeals to both fans and newcomers to the series.

Showrunners from Cobra Kai are also on board as executive producers, ensuring that the story remains faithful to its source material. According to insiders, the documentary will show how Cobra Kai reinvented LaRusso for a new generation, turning him from the scrappy teen underdog into a flawed adult navigating fatherhood, legacy, and rivalry.

Fans will also get a rare look into how Ralph Macchio prepared for the physicality of the role across the decades. The documentary will include rehearsal tapes, stunt preparation, and never-before-seen footage of early fight choreography. This will help paint a full picture of how the character developed physically and emotionally.

Netflix has not yet released a trailer, but teaser images show Macchio walking through an empty dojo, revisiting key filming locations, and reflecting on Daniel’s life-defining moments. The documentary will also explore LaRusso’s cultural impact beyond entertainment—how he became a symbol of perseverance, resilience, and mentorship for millions around the world.

In a recent interview, Macchio shared, “Playing Daniel LaRusso has been one of the great privileges of my life. This documentary is a love letter not just to the character, but to the fans who have kept his story alive for more than 40 years.”

The announcement comes as Cobra Kai prepares for its final season, creating the perfect moment to celebrate Daniel’s journey. The documentary will serve as a tribute to both the legacy of the Karate Kid and the modern relevance of its core themes: honor, respect, and personal growth.

Netflix has promised a global release and is planning exclusive early screenings in Los Angeles and Tokyo, two cities that played key roles in the Karate Kid saga. Fans will have the chance to attend Q&A panels with the cast and crew, along with limited-edition merchandise commemorating the event.

As anticipation builds for the 2026 premiere, one thing is certain: Daniel LaRusso’s story is far from over. Whether you grew up watching him face off against Cobra Kai or discovered him through streaming, this documentary is a long-overdue celebration of a pop culture icon whose crane kick still echoes through time.
